Camper vans are usually built to accommodate one or two people because of the compact interior space. I've also written about families traveling with one or two kids, but those cases are much more rare. Today, I'm checking out a van explicitly built to accommodate five people.
Having recently written about Rossmonster and its new truck camper, I was curious about how the company deals with camper vans. And that's how I stumbled upon its most recent custom adventure van build.

Seeing the level of craftsmanship and the quality materials used in the truck camper, I already had high expectations. And to be frank, Rossmonster didn't disappoint. Keep in mind that Rossmonster makes custom builds, so someone specifically requested the project I'm checking out today.

What we have here is a converted Mercedes Sprinter with a 144" wheelbase. On the outside, this van could've been quite stealthy were it not for the very obvious pop-top roof tent, which I'll present a bit later.

The rig rides on BF Goodrich all-terrain tires, but it's safe to say you don't want to go too deep off the beaten path in this van. Regarding exterior features, there's little to talk about. You won't find a front bumper, a bike carrier, an awning, or other accessories we typically see on camper van builds. But just as I said earlier, this is a custom build, so the customer probably didn't want any of these.

Things get much more interesting inside. The interior boasts a cleverly designed, open layout with a focus on practicality. Regarding looks, the builders used vinyl tiles for the floor and a painted shiplap for the ceiling. Moreover, you'll notice striking walnut slab cabinetry, while the counter features Slate Paperstone tops.

But by far, my favorite aesthetic details in this van are the walls. You might not be able to tell from the pictures, but these walls are upholstered in Sugarshack Glacier fabric, developed by Revolution Fabrics. Not only does it give the walls a textured look, but I find the color to be much more soothing than the typically-chosen white.

Behind the driver's and passenger's seats, Rossmonster devised a seating area. It consists of an 18-inch JMG captain's chair on one side and a Freedman foldaway seat for two people. Both seating options feature three-point safety harnesses to keep the occupants safe.

Before we check out the rest of the interior, I want to first present one of the sleeping spots located right above the seating area. You guessed it, I'm referring to the pop-up roof tent. It's quite a straightforward feature. You'll have to climb on a ladder to get inside, and there's enough space to sleep two people up there. Besides a mattress, you'll also find bug nets that can be fully covered for when you want total darkness.

Move deeper into the interior, and you'll discover a tiny kitchen area consisting of a counter on each side of the interior. The one on the passenger side integrates a 15 x 20-inch (38 x 51-centimeter) sink with storage underneath, while the other houses a 4.6 cubic-foot Isotherm refrigerator and a shelf. For cooking, you'll have to use a single-burner induction stove.

Next, we have the dinette area, located at the very rear of the van. It features two sizeable benches and a swivel table. Furthermore, this space can be transformed into a double bed.

For storage, Rossmonster raised this space's floor by six inches (15 centimeters), using the space below for storage. However, you can also use the overhead cabinets to store stuff, and there's also a bit of space left underneath one of the benches.

One unique feature in this area is a bunk bed that can sleep a person. It's mounted on L-Traks and can be folded up to create more space or even remove it if you don't need it. And that's how this camper van can accommodate up to five people.

The utility systems in this camper van, housed underneath the benches, aren't too sophisticated. For plumbing, Rossmonster fitted a 30-gallon (113-liter) freshwater tank, an under-mounted 10-gallon (38-liter) gray water tank, and an Aqua-Hot system that not only provides hot water but also serves as a heater. What's more, the electrical system consists of 340 Ah AGM batteries, a 3,000 W inverter, and 100 W solar panels on the roof.

As you might've already noticed by now, there wasn't enough space to fit a bathroom, especially since this Srinter has a 144" wheelbase. However, Rossmonster did fit an outdoor shower at the rear, integrated into one of the benches. There's also a teak shower mat you can put on the ground.

All in all, Rossmonster has created an awesome camper van. I don't know what its owner is going to use it for, but I can assume it's for shorter trips with their family. Even though it can fit up to five people, it probably won't be able to comfortably accommodate them long-term, especially since the utility systems aren't powerful and large enough to sustain off-grid travel for a longer while.

Rossmosnter hasn't shared the exact price for this custom build. However, we do know that their custom van projects range from $60,000 to $150,000 (€54,369 to €135,922) without including the base vehicle cost. I know that's a vast range, but it all depends on the exact features and finishes you opt for. You can learn more about the company’s projects and build processes on its website.
