German automaker Porsche will introduce a new turbocharged flat-four engine for its entry-level Boxster and Cayman sportscars within the next year.
Expected to be based on the current 3.8-liter flat-six unit, the 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four could be paired with the company’s PDK gearbox and develop at least 350 HP and 360 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm. This mean the new engine to be fitted in the Boxster and Cayman models will be lighter, more powerful and more fuel efficient than the existing naturally-aspirated 2.7-liter flat-six and could even match the bigger 3.4-liter flat-six found in the S versions.

Besides the already mentioned models, the new turbocharged flat-four could find its way in the future entry level “Baby Boxster”, due to arrive in 2015. The powerplant is expected to debut within the year and could show up at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The last Stuttgart-built flat-four engines were developed in the 1970s and fitted on the 1976 Porsche 912 and the 1976 Porsche 914.
