German automaker Porsche has confirmed yesterday’s rumor about developing a turbocharged flat-four engine, but revealed that the new unit won’t see the light of day until 2016.

Speaking to Autocar, an unnamed Porsche representative said the new four-cylinder engine is still in an early development phase and “it will be another three years at least” before the company will be ready to reveal more. “It is not due before 2016”, he added.

According to yesterday’s report, the new turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four engine will be based on the current 3.8-liter flat-six unit and could develop at least 350 HP and 360 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm when paired with a PDK gearbox.

Expected to be lighter, more powerful and more fuel efficient than the existing 2.7-liter flat-six, the turbocharged powerplant will be fitted in the entry-level Boxste / Cayman models, and probably a future “baby Boxster” due to arrive in 2015.
