Missing from Le Mans’ top LMP1 tier for no less than 16 years, Porsche has created a lot of buzz with their 2014 comeback. After previewing their prototype racer, the Germans have completed their factory driver lineup with the addition of Swiss pilot Neel Jani.
A former Toro Rosso Formula 1 test driver, Jani, who has been racing with the Rebellion Racing team in the American Le Mans Series, will join Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas in testing the new LMP1 vehicle.
"To compete for Porsche in the sports car World Endurance Championship WEC and at the Le Mans 24 Hours is a dream come true," said Jani. “Porsche is incomparable with any other marque in sports car racing and I'm proud to now be a part of the Porsche works team. My goal is to win the Le Mans 24 Hours and secure the WEC World Championship title with Porsche. I don't just want to build on Porsche's successful history, I want to add a new chapter."
Porsche is currently the most successful constructor in the 2014 Hours of Le Mans, having won 16 races from 1970 through 1998. Audi is second with 12 victories, all of them earned the past 14 years.
