Porsche 911 Carrera Saves Fuel. Incredible, Isn't It?

It would seem that Porsche has set its sights on breaking all the rules. Porsche put in the driver seat of a standard 345 bhp Porsche 911 Carrera with Porsche's PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe an ex-racing driver and n-tv presenter of Motor magazine that goes by the name of Klaus Niedzwiedz. He had the not so easy task of driving the pure breed super car in the most fuel efficient way possible.

He covered 648 kilometers or 400 miles on public roads and manage to achieve an average fuel consumption of only 6.7 liters/100 km which is equal to 42.2 mpg. During the trip he easily outperformed the combined fuel consumption specified by the Euro 5 standard which already sets a benchmark in this category of sports car at 9.8 liters/100 km (28.8 mpg).

The outstanding performance was achieved by covering 190 kilometers or 118 miles of the route on country roads and 30 kilometers or 19 miles in city traffic conditions, and the remaining distance on the famous Autobahn. The car's fuel tank and engine compartment was sealed after it was filled before and after the test by a certified inspector of the German DEKRA Car Inspection Authority.

The driver kept the car's engine between 1,800 and 2,000 rpm in moderate rain conditions and with the headlights turned on. The car stayed at a road speed between 90 and 130 km/h (56-81 mph), and an average speed of 84 km/h or 52 mph.

“The result proves that with a lot of feeling and discipline you can even drive a 3.6-litre, 345-bhp sports car very economically,” test driver Klaus Niedzwiedz said.

This is all very nice and dandy, but would want to drive a Porsche 911 Carrera economically?
