Pontiac's Final Days

The cat and mouse game between media/inside sources on one hand and GM officials on the other continued today with the favorite topic these past two weeks: the fate of GM's brand. Today, Pontiac.

This time, an inside source says that the American manufacturer is planning to announce the demise of Pontiac as soon as next Monday. Contacted by Inside Line, GM PR Tom Wilkinson said, in the manner we are used to by now. "There's nothing I can share with you at this time. Keep your eyes on our media site. Officially, nothing has changed with Pontiac's niche-brand status, until you hear differently," he said.

The first news of a possible killing of Pontiac, along with GMC, surfaced at the end of last week. Of course, GM officials stepped in and denied such a measure, even if they didn't do it in a very convincing manner.

"The strategy we laid out for you is still the strategy. Are we working it, tweaking it, examining every aspect of it? Yes, but nothing has changed with our strategy. Reports that GMC is going away are just unfounded, unsubstantiated and untrue," Mark LaNeve, company's sales chief said a day later. No mention of Pontiac was made at the time.

The same cautious response was given by GM regarding plans to shut down most of their US based plants this summer, in an effort to cut cost and lower the inventory. Yesterday morning, GM didn't deny the news, as it said it would rather notify their workers first and only then the media.

Apparently, they did that and, after all, GM will close down 13 of its facilities this summer. The full story on the subject can be found here.
