Although he scored Renault's first podium in 2008 – in Germany – Piquet Jr. only brought home 19 from team's 80 points overall. As he's aware of the fact that only a better performance in 2009 can secure a further season with Renault, Piquet revealed his team is nothing but supportive in his quest to improve himself in the championship.
“I don't think the team is putting too much pressure on me. If anything I am putting pressure on myself because I am so determined to do well and help the team. I have no doubts about the support of the whole team and I get on well with everyone,” admitted Piquet in an interview for Eurosport.
The former GP2 Series runner-up – back when he was competing against Lewis Hamilton in F1's feeder series – commented on his relationship with the Renault mechanics as a response to his father's public advice (to team boss Flavio Briatore) to stop putting pressure on Nelsinho.
The former 3-time F1 champion advised the Italian boss – and the other Renault members, for that matter – to start helping his son in areas he is currently underperforming in order to improve his skills throughout the season. Having attended every race of his son this year, Nelson Piquet Sr. found out for himself how his son is looked upon by the Renault mechanics and race engineers.
“We don't really talk about driving, but it's good to have his advice and support as he has a lot of experience in motorsport,” Piquet Jr. added.
