The most efficient version of Peugeot’s funky new 208 is the 1.4-liter e-HDI, which can reportedly exceed the 90 MPG (3.13 l/100km) in real world driving conditions, reaching a reported 93.4 MPG (3.02 l/100km), having been driven with the utmost care.

Now, two such cars have been entered in the 2012 MPG Marathon, which consists of a route containing a wide assortment of roads from England and Wales, totaling 370 miles (592 km). One of the 208 drivers was Chris Russon, from Trinity Mirror Regional Newspapers, who stated that: “While this year’s MPG Marathon was as demanding as ever, I was delighted with the performance and economy of the Peugeot 208, especially achieving the 93.4 mpg average when 83.1 is the figure for the official Combined Drive Cycle. The 208 has a very comfortable environment and over distance I became completely at one with the driving position, characterised by the new smaller steering wheel. Its quality feel and controls fell perfectly to my hands and made for a relaxed journey, despite the many driving challenges we faced.

With such economy figures in such a small and relatively inexpensive car, the 208 e-HDI is definitely one of the picks of the range, up there with the upcoming GTi.
