People of Detroit Demand Statue of RoboCop

Detroit is the American city best known for cars production and Motown music, but a growing number of people want it to be known for... a statue of RoboCop. According to a recent Detroit News article, a number of enthusiasts want the city to erect a statue in honor of the 80's cult movie icon.

They have drummed up interest on the Internet, taking to both Facebook and Twitter. "A statue of RoboCop would drive so much tourism," argued a Twitter user named Casseopedia. A Facebook page that was created Monday to build support for the statue of the fictional character already had 700 fans the next day.

"Look at it this way; the city has wasted truckloads of money on various things that have resulted in NOTHING for the people. Embezzlement for one... if money is going to be wasted on frivolous things, why not something that would at least make this (currently) depressing place semi-fun?" wrote Aaron Aitken on the site.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has no plans to take action in this matter and build a robotic crime-fighter statue. However, there is a precedent for the move, as Philadelphia has erected a statue in honor of “Rocky”.

However, the statue of the famous movie boxer could symbolize determination and guts, while RoboCop movies are set in a no-so-friendly Detroit, which becomes a crime-ridden metropolis run by corrupt officials and a security force owned by a private enterprise. There are also countless other areas in which Detroit needs to spend the money.
