Panasonic, AT&T to Work on Connected Car Concepts

Seeing how the infotainment solutions and connected systems for cars are gaining an increasing importance on the automotive market, two of the biggest companies on the telecommunications market, Panasonic and AT&T announced this week a partnership that will eventually lead to the creation of new such systems.

Work on connected car systems has already begun in the US, with the first products, intended at first for the automotive manufacturers in North America, to be tested on real cars by the end of the current year.

Each of the two companies will provide the services and products they do best. For one, Panasonic will supply the hardware and integration services, while AT&T will provide network services. The two companies have not revealed what exactly the new products are, nor did they make any comments on the financial aspects of the deal.

Panasonic and AT&T have selected Peachtree City as the starting point of the project. The city will be converted to become a model of the city of the future, with an entire treasure of high tech devices to be deployed there and create a haven for smart vehicle and in-vehicle lifestyle systems testing.

"As today's drivers spend increasing amounts of time on the road, they continue to seek vehicles that complement their 'always-on', hyper-mobile lifestyles," said Steve Deguchi, president of Panasonic Automotive Systems Company of America.

"Automakers that successfully make vehicles that deliver smart, personalized services to drivers on demand have a tremendous opportunity to stand out from the competition. The most appealing vehicles will be those that serve as yet another node in a driver's existing network of devices."
