Opel Ampera Starts Blogging

While the American customers have already begun experiencing the Volt plug-in hybrid vehicle, the Europeans are yet to meet Volt's local version, the Ampera. Set to launch later this year, the Ampera is making its first shy steps into the spotlight.

Opel announced today the launch of the Ampera blog, the place where “engineers, designers and marketers” come together to “describe the concept, technology and environmental compatibility of this revolutionary electric vehicle.“ (The German manufacturer likes to launch blogs ahead of the vehicles it works on, having already done so with the Insignia, Astra and Meriva).

When it comes onto the market a few months from now, the model will have to battle the Leaf, Nissan's electric vehicle that has already begun deployment in the UK. The Ampera, as is the case with the Volt, bets on the fact that it is not a pure EV, but a plug-in hybrid, meaning that, in theory, it should provide a bigger range than its rival.

The model will be powered by 288 lithium-ion cells packed into a battery, giving the car a power of 150 horsepower and 370 Nm of instant torque. Naught to sixty acceleration has been rated at nine seconds, with the top speed expected to reach 161 km/h. Details about the range of the model are still to be released.

“We realize that such an innovative vehicle takes a lot of explaining. That’s why my colleagues and I think this blog is so important,” Opel management board member Rita Forst wrote in her first entry on the blog, which will be available in English and German.
