GM's OnStar range of vehicles services was honored by The Edison Awards with the Silver Edison Award for Best New Product of the Year. The award was won by OnStar's Stolen Vehicle Slowdown system (SVS), as being one of the most innovative systems of the year.
“Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is a prime example of the rapid pace of innovation underway at OnStar,” Chris Preuss, president of OnStar said when receiving the award. “We are developing services that not only keep our subscribers safe, but virtually everyone on the road as well.”
OnStar SVS is a system first introduced two years ago, developed from the existing stolen vehicle service provided ever since 1996. It allows law enforcement and OnStar personnel to work together in finding the stolen vehicle.
SVS uses the existing GPS satellites to locate the stolen vehicle. Once the theft has been acknowledged, the owner of the car calls OnStar and tells them about the vehicle. Once the call is made, police are directed to where the car is located, while OnStar sends a remote signal to the vehicle and it begins to slow down.
OnStar's system is basically comprised of two major components: the Stolen Vehicle Slowdown (SVS) and the Remote Ignition Block.
As for The Edison Awards, they were established in 1987 in honor of Thomas Alva Edison and recognize some of the most innovative products in several fields of the industry (technology, electronics and computers, science and medical, and so on).
This year, the first prize in the technology category went to the 3M Mobile Projection Technology, from 3M. The complete list of winners can be found by following this link.
