There are lots of OBD2 mobile apps out there, most of them on Android, but only a handful of them come with support for the majority of car models out there.
MotorData OBD, for example, supports all U.S. market models launched since 1996, as well as cars unveiled in Japan in the last 22 years. Of course, European models are supported too, as long as they’re produced in 2000 or later.
Beginning with the latest versions, the app comes with support for even more brands in addition to the ones that were already fully compatible.
MotorData OBD, which in the Google Play Store is listed as “MotorData OBD Car Diagnostics. ELM OBD2 scanner” now comes with dedicated plugins for Suzuki, Mazda, BMW, Renault, and Subaru. And what’s more, Toyota and Nissan plugins have also received an improved user interface as well as additional polishing, so everything should now work smoother than before.
According to the developing team, the BMW plugin, in particular, is worth a try, as it can read and erase DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes, or as many people call them, fault codes) from various ECUs.
The latest version of MotorData OBD is 1.20.10.657, so you need to be running at least this build to get all the aforementioned plugins.
If MotorData OBD isn’t your favorite cup of tea, you can always give a try to CarScanner, another OBD2 diagnostics app that comes with support for Android and works with ELM327 adapters. Of course, there are plenty of alternatives out here, including Torque Pro, so as long as you use a compatible adapter, they should connect to your car just fine.
It goes without saying most of them come with in-app purchases, and this is the case of MotorData OBD as well, but given they provide you with lots of sensor readings that would otherwise be available at a much higher price elsewhere, they could be a smart investment.
