The “wind in your face” feeling is one of the things about riding motorcycles which makes some riders smile, and other sigh. That is, because the wind equals noise, and some guys really hate noise, and find it highly discomforting. Thankfully, there are ways to minimize noise, and still enjoy riding for prolonged periods of time before feeling really sick. Nonoise is one of the products which will come to the help of motorcyclists in search for a quieter ride.
Foam ear mufflers can be bought from the shop at the corner of your street and they’re dirt-cheap. However, not everybody likes them, because they block out all the exterior noises, and tend to isolate the rider too much. While buffeting noises and the roar of the exhausts pipes are the least desirable noises, riders would like to be able to hear sirens and speech without taking the helmet and plugs off.

The Nonoise ear plugs bring a different feeling, as they do not obstruct the ear canal completely. Their intelligent design leaves an open port in the middle, so wearing them does not come with the blocked ear feeling. The Venturi-shaped sound channel and zirconium oxide ceramic filter are literally tuned to provide acoustic attenuation over certain frequencies, while allowing the wearer to still hear the sounds.

The manufacturer claims wearing these plugs will even allow riders to enjoy intercom, music and retain full situational awareness. Washable, and therefore re-usable, these plugs are silicon-free, and thus pose minimal health risks. I know this technology first-hand, as I used similar products for live performances with my metal band.

Being able to hear yourself and the band mates as good as it gets is of course paramount, but high volume levels on big stages or in small clubs with the guitar amps really close will have a negative impact on hearing. And if the Nonnoise plugs work as well on the bike as their music-focused ones did, then $29.95 (€21) is not a huge price any longer. Check out the Nonoise plugs out following the link.
