Noise from Renault Testing Disturbs UK Villagers

Renault F1 seems to be giving the people of Duxford plenty of headaches these days. The reason is none other that the team's recent straight-line testing, conducted near the Cambridgeshire based village. According to the local newspaper, it seems the villagers have expressed their disagreement with the testing because of the high level of noise from the the F1 cars.

Quite a number of people have said the noise is unbearable, including people who were indoors with all the windows closed - they could still hear it. People who keep horses have complained to me that their horses were running all over the place,” said Cllr Peter Topping – who represents Thriplow and Whittlesford on South Cambridgeshire District Council – according to the Cambridge News.

According to the same official, it seems the villagers did not expect such a noise when initially agreeing to the straight line testing for the Enstone based team. By allowing Renault's F1 team to test their R29s near Duxford, the community is receiving income as a result of a financial settlement.

Topping also insisted that, although the noise did not disturbed all the villagers in Duxford, he will raise the issue during a future discussion with the venue's boss. Renault team manager Steve Nielsen admitted the testing comes with a high level of noise, but revealed almost half of the 2009 testing has already been done outside the UK.

We can't run these car silenced. It would be great if we could and it is something we looked into but it would negate all of our data if we did. The car needs to be identical to the cars that race in the Grands Prix and unfortunately that means running it without silencers,” said Nielsen, according to the aforementioned source.

I have some sympathy with people about the noise. The cars are noisy things but this is absolutely not something we would be doing every day for a week. We have 8 of these days a year and three of them have been done outside the UK already,” added the Renault team manager.
