Nobody Should Ever Ride a Bike or Motorcycle, NY Legislator Declares

Age can play dirty tricks on the human mind, and Suffolk County NY Legislature member Thomas F. Barraga, 70, is one of the latest victims. Namely, he replied to a letter Matthew Cutrone, 17, sent him saying that nobody in the county should ride bicycles or motorcycles.
Cutrone initially complained about his mother being knocked down while riding a bike. She was impacted by a driver who was not paying attention and her son inquired about the possibility of future bikes-only lanes.

Mr. Barraga replied: “I have lived in West Islip most of my life and my personal feeling is that no one who lives in our hamlet or for that matter in Suffolk County should ever ride a bicycle or a motorcycle. Drivers expect to see other drivers on the road not bicyclists and motorcyclists," he added.

I'll leave you to judge whether people like honorable Mr. Barraga are actually doing anything for the communities they represent, or tax payers are wasting their money on no-longer-very-smart politicians.

And to help you decide better, here's Portland, Oregon, with yet another year (2013) with zero bicycle fatalities, just before the guys understood the need for better biking infrastructure.
