NHTSA Opens Investigation on Prius' Faulty Brakes

Following some 100 reports regarding problems with the brakes in Toyota's Prius hybrid, and perhaps as a result of the media frenzy stirred by this latest development, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced yesterday it is opening a formal investigation of the 2010 Toyota Prius.

According to the NHTSA, the main goal of the investigation is to find out whether allegations that the Prius experiences momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over an uneven road surface, pothole or bump.

“Safety is our top priority,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. “That is why in recent weeks NHTSA has also issued a consumer advisory on the recall of several models of Toyota vehicles and the Pontiac Vibe involving pedal entrapment and sticky accelerator pedals. We will continue to monitor these issues closely.”

Battered Toyota replied to the announcement with a calm voice, the voice of a company now awaiting only the worse. Especially because this new problem is in no way related with the previous two recalls...

"Toyota is aware that NHTSA has opened a Preliminary Evaluation centered on owner complaints of a braking issue with the 2010 model year Prius. Toyota will cooperate fully with NHTSA’s investigation."

"This preliminary evaluation addresses owner complaints specific to the 2010 Prius.  This condition is not related to either the floor mat entrapment recall or the sticky pedal recall currently in action."

"Toyota will continue to evaluate the condition as it relates to owner complaints and will keep NHTSA informed of its progress."
