NHTSA Awards Lifesavers

It's not often we see these days a government organization honoring the people that, because of the job they choose to do, are responsible for saving lives on an hourly basis. With the NHTSA, DoT and other acronyms caught up in fighting distracted driving or major recalls, there's little time for anybody to think of the men and women who save lives for a living.

Luckily, the Annual Lifesavers Conference, an event organized by the NHTSA earlier this week, was the perfect venue for the people and even organizations thought to be the best in their line of work to be recognized.

These people, 17 in all, not necessarily part of an emergency response service, but coming from other safety organizations, televisions and even the Senate, have been awarded by the safety watchdog for the efforts they've made to improve highway safety.

"Our award winners exemplify the highest standards of achievement in the field of traffic safety," said NHTSA administrator David Strickland. "We are seeing major progress in a whole range of safety areas thanks to the professionalism, dedication and energy of our award winners and thousands like them in communities all across the country."

The winners of the NHTSA awards are: Janette Fennell (KidsAndCars.org founder), Jonlee Anderle (Laramie Police Department), Jerold Cibley (traffic safety advocate), Beth Ebel (Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center director), Linda Gray (Arizona state senator), James R. Hanni, (AAA Allied VP), David C. Huff, (Montana Traffic Education Programs director), Patrick James, (traffic safety advocate), LaVonne King (Indian Reservation Roads technician), Cathy L. Lanier (Washington Metropolitan Police Department chief), Robert Lillis (Evalumetrics Research president), Matthew Mento (Digital Account executive, ESPN), Deb Miller (Kansas Secretary of Transportation), Dwayne Umbarger (Kansas state senator), Jevon Thoresen (account executive, ESPN), the New York City Department of Transportation and the Ohio Strategic Transportation Safety Plan Committee.
