Next-Generation VW Touareg to Be Launched at Detroit

Volkswagen will bring the new generation Touareg at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show in January, with the lineup to also include a hybrid version. Preliminary figures concerning the hybrid are claiming that the future model will employ a parallel hybrid system and a supercharged V6 TSI that will contribute to the final performance figures of 324 horsepower.

Using electricity alone, the Touareg Hybrid will be capable of reaching a maximum speed of 31 mph (50 km/h) while keeping fuel consumption and CO2 emissions at zero level.

The next-generation Touareg has already been seen in various spyshots. The model is going to be a bit sportier, with the most significant changes to be spotted in the front fascia, grille, headlights, rear fascia and taillights. As for the interior, the Touareg will come with several enhancements as well but it's still unclear which parts are actually going to be upgraded.

The engine lineup will be mostly aimed at cutting emissions and fuel consumption as much as possible. A 3.6-liter V6 unit and a 4.2-liter V8 petrol configuration will be available, with a hybrid version most likely to be offered as well.

Volkswagen struggled to make the new Touareg lighter, in order to support its green efforts and also contribute to the final performance figures of the car. Furthermore, it is expected to be cheaper, as the German carmaker intends to tackle the economic recession with lower prices for select models.

The full list of specifications is likely to surface in the upcoming months, prior to the public launch at the Detroit Auto Show.
