The all-new 2015 Hyundai Sonata should be an exciting option for mid-size sedan buyers, but those looking for a new hybrid version of Hyundai’s sedan will have to wait a little longer. According to a report from Car and Driver, the next-gen Hyundai Sonata Hybrid won’t arrive until the 2016 model year, and the current car will live on until then.
Although there are no details yet about the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, the current Sonata Hybrid will carry over unchanged for the 2015 model year selling alongside the redesigned seventh-gen Sonata sedan. In its current form, the Sonata Hybrid mates a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 47-hp electric motor and lithium polymer battery helping to return EPA-estimated fuel economy of 36 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined. These numbers will also carry over for 2015 according to the EPA’s fueleconomy.gov website.

Given the advancements that Hyundai made in the fuel economy of the 2015 Sonata, we would expect some equally big changes in store for the next-gen Hybrid model. Just looking at the base 2.4-liter Sonata, the 2015 model year brings improvements in fuel economy of 1 mpg city and 2 mpg highway, but the big news is the all-new Sonata Eco that will go into production later this summer

The Sonata Eco pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that will give the car EPA numbers of 28 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 32 mpg combined. What’s more, this model will be priced at $23,275, which compares to the $26,000 starting price of the 2014 Sonata Hybrid (2015 model year pricing is not available yet).

There is no word as to when the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, but the report indicates that it could arrive later this year or early next year making the LA Auto Show or Detroit Auto Show the best possibilities.
