The next-generation Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid will be significantly less expensive than the current model, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said earlier this week.
Speaking at Fortune’s Brainstorm Green conference, Akerson announced the next-generation Volt, which is due in 2015 or 2016, would cost up to $10,000 less and would eventually become profitable.
"This next generation, we think we can decrease the price on the order of $7,000 to $10,000,” Akerson said. However, it looks like GM has a long way to go with the Volt, a vehicle that’s still causing the company to lose money. “We’ve sold about 26,500 of them. We’re losing money on every one,” he added.
Assembled since December 2010 at GM’s Detroit, Michigan facility, the five-door hatchback Chevrolet Volt is powered by a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a 149 HP (111 kW) electric motor.
