The current C6 generation of the Chevrolet Corvette is a car that has changed the world’s perception of American performance vehicles. From the standard version of the car, which uses a LS3 V8 delivering 430 hp to the ZR-1 incarnation that comes with a 638 hp LS9 V8, the ‘Vette offers pure performance.
But it’s time to take a look at what the car will offer in the future. The next generation of the Chevrolet Corvette will offer an all-new powerplant, which (thank God!) will keep the V8 layout - certain rumors indicated that the entry-level version of the car will use a V6.
According to Motor Trend, which uses information from General Motors sources, the Vette’s V8 will take a step or two on the downsizing road, offering a smaller displacement.
The most likely unit to be fitted in the C7 Corvette’s engine bay is the next generation of GM V8 small block engines. GM has confirmed the units will come with aluminum blocks and heads, direct injection and an efficiency-boosting combustion system. However, the upcoming powerplants will keep GM’s overhead-valve design, a feature that keeps the production costs low and offers a compact layout.
Motortrend’s sources indicate the engine in the next ‘Vette will have a capacity of 5.5 liters and will deliver about 440 hp.
If we look at the slight power upgrade and consider the engine’s downsizing, we can say there is a replacement for displacement. But we’ll have to wait until 2012 (at least) to be sure.
