One-off Corvette Z06 Celebrates Factory Team's 50th Le Mans Anniversary

Chevrolet will build a special 2011 Corvette Z06 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first appearance at Le Mans 24 Hours race. The one-off Corvette has the number plaque VIN 0001 and features the same white and blue paint scheme as the 1960 Corvette which won its class at the famous endurance race 50 years ago.

The anniversary Corvette will be sold later this year, with the money obtained being offered to the National Corvette Museum. Whoever wishes to buy the car must donate $300,000 to the museum and also pay the $85,000 sticker price. That makes it one very expensive Corvette Z06. But at least it’s unique.

The special edition Z06 also comes with a Z07 performance package, a CFZ black carbon fiber package plus some bits from the ZR1. A unique feature will be the side view mirrors painted in Cyber Gray instead of the Black that comes on the Carbon edition.

The car will be officially revealed a this Saturday’s ALMS race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, one week before the Corvette racing team leaves to France to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 12-13 2010. The event at Laguna Seca will feature a special Corvette Legends of Le Mans display with appearances by drivers Dick Thompson and Dick Guldstrand.

They set the bar high, and they accomplished so much with so little. Today we have the full resources of Chevrolet and GM behind Corvette Racing, but these pioneers are the ones who truly began Corvette’s performance heritage. Corvette Racing is continuing to build on that foundation for those who will come after us,” said Doug Fehan, Corvette racing program manager, about legends like Dick Thompson and Zora Arkus-Duntov, the “father of the Corvette”.
