When the current Cadillac CTS came onto the world stage, back in 2002, its ‘art and science’ design language shocked all those who saw it - some loved it, while others simply could not stand the sight of it. Now, however, with the new CTS, they plan on bringing out a “more sophisticated, more premium” offering.
It seems that GM’s current head of design, Ed Welburn, is not particularly pleased with the old car, which he admits is striking, but not really premium-looking. Welburn went on to say, about the old car: "It had a dramatic presence, very angular. But when you really look at it, the surfacing of the body was not very sophisticated at all.” He says that the new car will be “more sculpted”, in order to better match its excellent rivals from Germany and Japan.

The new CTS is expected to arrive on the market in mid-2013, and “will continue to be very dramatic”, yet the approach will be quite different to that of the old car. A key factor in this new decision is the fact that they’ve given up ‘over-chroming’ everything, giving the upcoming car a slightly more sober and understated look.
