The Oz-based branch of MCN has revealed spy photos of what is believed to be a new prototype of the famous Yamaha YZF-R1 super sport street-legal motorcycle. According to the Australians, the two photographed bikes were out on the track for some testing against a BMW S1000RR, and wore old R6 modified bodywork as a disguise.
Since the S1000RR has been spied back in the day with some makeshift R6 panels on, we might believe that these are the first choice as a misleading tool. Anyway, as the R1 and R6 share the same dimensions, loading some body panels from the small machine onto the larger one is really feasible.

As far as these low-quality pics show, it looks like the R1 will have a large collector box in a low-swung position and a central air intake, replacing the side ones of the current series.

The small side-mounted silencer resembles the one in newer R6 bikes and is by far the first choice for motorsport machines in MotoGP and other racing series: it offers a lower center of gravity than the underseat cans do, and a shorter exhaust line means less weight.

This makes us believe that the new R1 might be closer to the M1 in terms of overall design and mass centralization... much to the joy of the “speed-freaks” and MotoGP addicts.
