Google continues the work on refining Android Auto, and while users keep struggling with issues, the search giant ships new mysterious updates whose purpose is hopefully to resolve these problems.
The company rarely talks about its Android Auto updates, and version 10.6 makes no exception.

Android Auto 10.6 is now available for download in the stable channel, which is a little surprising considering Google did not release a beta build this time. The search firm typically releases beta updates, giving testers the opportunity to take the new releases for a spin, eventually promoting them to the stable channel if no major bugs are reported.

Android Auto 10.6 seems to change this approach, making its way directly to production devices. It also launches without a changelog, meaning that Google provides no information about what's new in the update.

It doesn't mean the company has nothing to fix in Android Auto.

The most recent bug reports come from users who updated their devices to Android 14, Google's latest and greatest version of its mobile operating system.

Android 14 reportedly leads to all kinds of problems on Android Auto, beginning with app crashes and ending with lag that makes using apps impossible. The most common problem appears to be this lag that makes Android Auto unresponsive, especially with navigation apps. Google Maps and Waze can't follow users on the map, losing tracking and, therefore, providing inaccurate navigation directions.

Android 14 is still in the early release stage, so the number of reports in this regard is still limited. However, we should learn more about how Android 14 impacts the Android Auto experience in the coming weeks and months when more device manufacturers bring the new operating system to their devices.

Meanwhile, if you want to download Android Auto 10.6, you have two options. One, you can wait for the update to appear on the Google Play Store, when the new version will be offered automatically to your device. No input will be required on your side, as the update will be automatically downloaded and installed through the store. Two, you can get Android Auto 10.6 manually by downloading the stand-alone APK installer.

The method involves downloading the APK file, saving it to the local storage, and then launching the installation by tapping the installer. The process is fast and simple, and users must only follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. In some cases, you'll need special permissions, as Android devices aren't configured to allow the installation of apps from non-Google Play Store sources.

If you notice something new in Android Auto 10.6 (I didn't, as I already installed the update on my device and took it for a quick spin), make sure you drop us a line to let everybody know about it in the comment box after the jump.
