Porsche has already revealed photos and limited details of the brand new convertible edition of the 911 Carrera, due to go on sale in 2012. This offers the same high-tech aluminum-steel body with the Coupe, which makes the new drop-top lighter but also more refined than its predecessor.
The wheelbase has been shortened to keep the small dimensions that make this one of the most practical convertible sportscars on the market. However, the wheelbase has been increased, while the engine has moved ever so slightly forward for better balance.
The biggest change the new 911 Cabriolet is actually a revolutionary fabric top that is backed by a semi-rigid magnesium frame. This made it possible for designers to make a shape that closely resembles that of the coupe.
On the engine front, we have a new 3.4-liter with 250 hp that’s offered with a choice of standard seven-speed manual and optional seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox. This pushes the drop-top to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 286 km/h. On a combined run, it will go through 9.2 liters of fuel every 100 km and produce 217 grams of CO2.
Meanwhile, the new 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is powered by a 3.8-liter 400 horsepower flat six mated to a seven speed manual or a PDK. It’s capable of sprinting to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 301 km/h.
