New Nissan Qashqai Gets 163 HP 1.6-liter Turbo: Meets Euro 6 Regulations

As promised, Nissan is following up a very successful 2014 Qashqai launch with new engines to complete the range and offer buyers extra choices. Today, the company revealed a new 1.6-liter turbo belonging to the DIG-T family, which will be great for those who want a fast crossover.
The 1.6-liter turbo makes 163 horsepower at 5,600rpm and 240Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque between 2,000 and 4,000rpm. It's similar to the one on the Juke, but has been tuned for refinement and low fuel consumption.

Being compliant with Euro 6 regulations, the Qashqai DIG-T 163 claims fuel consumption from 48.7mpg (40.5 mpg US or 5.8 liters / 100 km)), equivalent to CO2 emissions from 134g/km.

The new DIG-T 163 engine is available in front-wheel-drive form and equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Performance won't exactly set your pants on fire, but with 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds, this is the fastest Qashqai model ever, a fact reinforced by the top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h).

By comparing this to a regular family hatchback, the disadvantage of the Qashqai's slightly taller body become a little obvious. For instance, Ford's new Focus model comes with a 1.5-liter turbo engine that's good for either 150 or 182 hp. The top spec model needs only 8.6 seconds to do its sprint and stops only once it reaches 224 km/h (139 mph).

Already available for order, the Qashqai DIG-T 163 will go on sale starting January next year. In Britain, the DIG-T 163 with a manual retails at £25,300 and is only available with TEKNA trim.

The other petrol engine choices

Not everybody needs 163 horsepower in a crossover, which is why the Qashqai is also available with a smaller turbo petrol engine. Sold under the name "DIG-T 115", this 1.2-liter turbo was co-developed with Renault and is available for a lot less money.

You guys probably knew that already. But what you didn't know is that you can now order it with Nissan's Xtronic CVT gearbox. It sounds like a dreadful idea, but we tested it in combination with the 130 horsepower 1.6L diesel and it was perfectly fine.
