Now that we know the engines that will be powering the Mk3 MINI and that the suspension settings will be adjustable by the flick of a button, the British company also revealed that the steering will be changed.
According to them, the next generation of EPS (electronic power steering) will offer speed-dependent support for the steering force. This would mean that the steering is supposed to evolve to some sort of electromechanical system.
This is going to help with the parking assist function but it will also promote agility, driving safety and comfort. The engineers that have been working on this new system claim that the steering ration can be implemented very directly (whatever that means).
We're guessing that most of the reviewers of the new cars will complain about the steering, or more precisely about its accuracy and feedback. In recent years, it seemed like no matter how good a steering system was, if it had any kind word even remotely similar to "electric" in its description, it was immediately deemed terrible.
The truth of the matter is, lately BMW made significant progress in this area, the LCI M5 and the M6 Gran Coupe featuring similar EPS systems that were praised in the reviews we read (well maybe not praised but notices as "greatly improved"). If the MINI will have the same system on board, we're thinking the go-kart feeling will be safe for another couple of years.
