Using aftermarket hydraulic pumps, some lowrider owners can make their cars jump up and down, something you used to see a lot in rap videos. However, we never thought we'd see the day when a factory-built Mercedes-Benz SUV could do something like that.
We've known the GLE had some crazy suspension about a month before the official launch when they showed what it could do. The point is not to make you look like you've bought the car with drug money, but to get the SUV unstuck from some something like sand or mud. Of course, not everybody needs that kind of stuff, so the tech is optional.
In reality, the system is not as violent as the one you see in this video. Instead, this is a technology demonstrator put together by the engineers for fun and to show the GLE's capabilities. Based on people's reaction, it seems to be working.
By the way, we found multiple versions of this video all over the net, but it seems to have originated from GT Spirit, which in turn got it from a guy named @MrDes during an event in Texas. Now that's something to look at while you down your beer!
Like most good things these days, the GLE's E-Active Body Control, which is what this system is called, draws power from a new 48-volt electrical system. We're told that it will be offered on 3-liter models and above. And yes, while the GLE 450 is the standard model in America, there are 2-liter models in Europe. Is Mercedes saying that you can't get caught with one of those?
We don't see this gimmick as something that will catch on and trickle to lesser crossovers. But the air suspension system can do so much more, like locking a specific wheel in place during off-roading or keeping the car level while cornering. And using cameras, the GLE can read the road ahead and adjust its suspension accordingly, though many cars promise that nowadays.
