Last year was pretty full for Mercedes-Benz Vans, with the Sprinter getting both a mid-cycle refresh and an entirely new model variant in the form of the hardcore Sprinter 4x4, a model which will also hit the US market starting with 2015.
This year seems to have also started pretty well for the Daimler division, especially since a couple of weeks ago we reported that Mercedes-Benz is actually the most profitable van manufacturer according to figures for 2013.

Another triumph for the new all-wheel drive Sprinter 4x4 will most likely be the fact that two Daimler employees managed to finish first in the Moroccan Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles behind the wheel of a rally-prepped... Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4.

Astrid Ebermann and Sabrina Trillmann took first place in the women's rallye in the Crossover category, a fact which is mighty impressive considering that more than 160 teams from around 30 countries took part in the even this year.

Beginning at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the actual rallye actually started in the Moroccan desert, near the Atlas Mountains.

With around 2,500 km (1553 miles) in total, the race covered mostly unpaved surfaces, where the new Sprinter 4x4 could fully demonstrate its off-road capabilities. This is even more impressive considering the fact that we're talking about a production car with minimal rally modifications.

The model was fitted with special wheels and sand tires, a rollover cage, an under-carriage protection and bucket seats. The team of mechanics assisting it didn't have to provide any assistance apart from a few minor repairs and a tire change.

This is the third win for Mercedes-Benz after taking part in the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles for the sixth time, with the first win being achieved back in 2009 with a Viano 4Matic and the second victory occuring in 2011 with a Vito 4x4.
