The old Mercedes-Benz A-Class was an awkward-looking mini MPV, with qualities that didn`t appeal to that many buyers looking for a car in its niche, so sales were never particularly good. This is why the German brand decided that the new A-Class would be a radical departure from the outgoing car.
Now, the new A-Class has really hit it big, with over 70,000 pre-orders from Western Europe alone. This means that one in every 10 people who attended the launch events signed their names up for one. It has been deemed as the most successful launch in the company’s history, according to the head of the company, Dieter Zetsche.
Zetsche also went on to say that they still have a lack of models, to cover all the niches, such as the small SUV sector, where Audi and BMW have taken a huge lead, both in Europe, as both automakers offer a variety of such vehicles, as well as in other important markets, such as China.
Zetche plans to have ‘the gap’ closed within five years, on the road to becoming the world’s largest premium automaker, by 2020.
