New Entry-Level Porsche Coming

Porsche plans to expand its line-up with the introduction of a new entry-level model that will be based on the Volkswagen BlueSport concept.

The vehicle will be placed bellow the Boxster, allowing Porsche to move the latter model upmarket. This means that the next generation of the Boxster, which is set to enter the market in 2012, will be a larger animal.

The BlueSport roadster was introduced as a concept back at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, with the vehicle receiving a wave of positive reactions. This is a strong argument for the vehicle’s production the VW Group can’t ignore.

Of course, the Group regards the matter as a business case. But this doesn’t necessarily have to be a negative thing. The vehicle is seen as a three-brand project, with this being the pathway to its profitability.

This means that the BlueSport concept will give birth to three different production models. One is the aforementioned baby Boxster, the second will be one built by VW itself, while the third should use the Audi badge. Autocar’s sources estimate that the three models should reach a combined production output of 100,000 units per year, with this being the condition for the production green light.

The new model would bring Porsche a bit closer to the mainstream area, as it is expected to be priced in the $40-50k area.

The vehicle would also tighten the bond between the brands in the VW Group’s portfolio, with the move being necessary for the synchronization of its production.
