“It's been a long time since we've had small cars in the United States built in the United States that has had, I think, the attributes and the quality and the performance that these cars are going to have,” Mark Reuss, GM North America president, was quoted as saying by Autonews.
Back in November, General Motors decided to idle operations at the plant, which was initially responsible for production of both Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6. At this time, the Aveo is manufactured in South Korea and is offered in either 3- or 5-door configuration.
“Small cars represent one of the fastest-growing segments in both the U.S. and around the world,” Troy Clarke, General Motors North America president said in a release back in June.
"GM will be the only automaker, foreign or domestic, to build small cars in the US, and we believe Orion Assembly and Pontiac Stamping are well suited to deliver a high-quality, fuel-efficient car that competes with anything in the marketplace.”
The current model is offered with a choice of two engines, a 1.2-liter DOHC and a 1.4-liter, with the latter producing 99.3 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 131 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It releases 140 grams of CO2 every kilometer while achieving a maximum speed of 105.6 mph (170 km/h).
