You could say that BMW is copying the same formula as Audi and making the same sausage in different sizes. After all, these two cars seem very much alike on paper. But the formula used for each one is slightly differ and result in cars that are as different as a cheeseburger and a Big Mac.
Two prototypes have been spotted testing on the Nurburgring in recent days, one for the new F23 2 Series and the other for the F33 4 Series, both convertibles. They both have 3-liter N55 engines and both have clearly been touched by the M division in some way.

However, the 2 Series is simpler, smaller and cheaper. It's the cheeseburger of the BMW range, with a simple fabric roof and a short wheelbase. It's going to be the go-to car for younger buyers who want a convertible but don't need rear passenger space.

The 4 Series convertible on the other hand features a complicated folding metal roof, which offers better soundproofing and weatherproofing. It's wider and longer than the outgoing 3 Series convertible, ideal for longer journeys.

Both will be available with a range of 4- and 6-cylinder engines, manual or automatic, RWD or xDrive and a host of cosmetic packages.
