Mosley Hails "Fair" Verdict in the "Lie-Gate"

FIA president Max Mosley commented on the decision of the World Motor Sport Council to hand McLaren Mercedes a suspended 3-race ban for the upcoming 12 months, arguing that it was the perfect way put things behind. The 78-year old Englishman revealed the decision was taken after McLaren have proved they are undergoing a complete culture change at Woking.

Just as a small reminder, McLaren appeared before the WMSC yesterday, in Paris, to explain their misleading of the FIA stewards following the Australian Grand Prix. They pleaded guilty to all charges.

Known to be a somehow-enemy of McLaren back when Ron Dennis was taking care of business at Woking, Mosley appears to have had a sudden change of heart towards the British team under its new management. He said there was no point in taking things further, especially since the “guilty” individuals have already been taken care of by McLaren.

In the end there were decisions taken by the people who are no longer involved. That being the case, it would have been unfair to go on with the matter. We think it's entirely fair. They've demonstrated there's a complete culture change and under those circumstances it's better to put the whole thing behind us. Unless they do something similar, that's the end of the matter,” said Mosley for British broadcaster BBC.

He also praised McLaren's new team boss Martin Whitmarsh for his attitude towards the FIA, this being a good reason why his team got off lightly.

Martin Whitmarsh made a very good impression. He's straightforward and wants to work with us. We're all trying to do the same thing, which is make the championship successful. Martin fully understands that and we reacted accordingly.

It was fair, honest and straightforward. I thought Martin [Whitmarsh] was happy with that. He knew they did something wrong so they got a slap,” added Mosley.

Could this be the beginning of a beautiful friendship (for a change) between the FIA and McLaren? Whitmarsh sure made the right steps so far, and Mosley responded accordingly. Apparently, miracles can happen...
