This mother must love her car quite a lot. It’s either that, or she must not trust the police with doing their job in the right way, considering she decided to tell officers that her toddler was in the backseat of her stolen car in order to persuade them to find the vehicle as soon as possible. Not only did the officers find the vehicle but they now accuse the woman of lying to get her car back faster, considering it appears her child was at daycare the whole time.
Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith said the woman’s vehicle was indeed stolen, but the problem is the child was never inside the vehicle, as officers have proof the kid was at daycare the entire time. According to the Baltimore Sun, police say the woman made up the story in hopes it would lead to a quick recovery of her vehicle.

Initially, the woman said she had parked the car in the 1300 block of Harlem Avenue in West Baltimore, at about 10:20 a.m. For some reason, she decided to leave the keys in the ignition, while the car was running with the child still inside. She told officers that she later saw a man enter the car and drive away. A stolen car is one thing; a missing child is something else completely.

Considerable resources were deployed, as the police started searching for the boy, even urging fellow citizens to help find the toddler. "The child was never in harm's way," Smith told reporters. "This was something that was fabricated in an effort to get a vehicle back. That's not a way to get a stolen vehicle back."

Naturally, what the woman did is considered illegal, which is why she will be charged with making a false statement. In fact, not even constitutionally explicit Fifth Amendment rights exonerate affirmative false statements. In other words, the system provides methods for challenging the Government’s right to ask questions, but it does not encourage lying.
