The Olympian swimmer was involved in a three-car accident last night. The crash happened around 9pm local time in Phelps' hometown, Baltimore. The Olympic gold medal winner was driving a Cadillac Escalade which collided with a Honda Accord that was driven by a woman.
Eye-witnesses say the two collided after someone ran a stoplight, and then hit the third car that was not moving, TMZ reported.
Though Michael’s car suffered some heavy damage, needing a tow-truck to remove it from the scene, the 24-year-old Olympian refused any medical treatment, and reportedly escaped with no serious injuries. Unfortunately, the woman complained of head and arm pain, therefore she was taken to a local hospital.
The police is still investigating the cause of the crash. However, alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash, police said to the aforementioned source. Phelps was questioned after the accident, but policemen found that a field sobriety test was not necessary.
The American swimmer is considered by many the greatest swimmer of all times. However he certainly is the greatest Olympian of all time, as Phelps has won by now 14 Olympic gold medals. As of August 2, 2009, Phelps has broken thirty-seven world records in swimming.
Phelps however does not have quite a clean history regarding his driving activities. In November 2004 Phelps was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Maryland. He pleaded guilty to DUI charges the following month and was granted probation before judgment. Michael was ordered to serve 18 months' probation, fined $250, forced to speak to high school students about drinking and driving and had to attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) meeting.
