Although it is labelled as a concept car, the CLS Shooting Break previews in many ways the second-generation of the “four-door coupe” CLS model. Which, as opposed to the current version, will sport a wagon variant as well. As the images show, it seems that Mercedes-Benz has chosen to build on the same successful design of the first CLS, rather than follow BMW’s path, which released an MPV-like model, the 5 Series GT.
The profile of the car keeps the coupe-like appearance, with a low window design and a sculpted rear quarter panel. The front uses elements from the SLS AMG super sports car, the most obvious being the big radiator grille sporting the large star in the middle. The headlights show a new shape and are emphasized by no fewer than 71 LEDs. The dynamic full LED headlamps combine the exciting daylight colour impression of LED technology with the performance, functionality and energy efficiency of today's bi-xenon light generation.
The concept previews not only the design of the next CLS, but also one of its engines. Mercedes-Benz says that the car features the forerunner of the forthcoming V-engine generation. The CLS Shooting Break has a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine, at 60 degrees cylinder angle and direct injection. It puts out 306 horsepower and a maximum torque of 272.9 lb-ft. (370 Nm). The engine will have a fuel consumption 25 percent lower than the unit it replaces and will be paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission.
