Mercedes to Provide Customer Cars for New Entries

German manufacturer Mercedes is willing to help the new F1 entries with the necessary technical package for the upcoming season. The marque's motorsport director Norbert Haug admitted that McLaren Mercedes will assist in any way possible, as long as the FIA gives green light to the new regulations.

In an attempt to reach a compromise with the Formula One Teams Association on the 2010 rules, the ruling body has agreed to increase the budget cap to 100 million euros in exchange of customer car regulations coming into place. In other words, new entries will be allowed to use other team's chassis when building their own car.

While admitting McLaren are ready to accept and help with the new regulations, Haug also made it very clear that Formula One is not to become a charity competition. Only teams able to support a long-time operation in the sport should be allowed to make the 2010 entry list, due to be published on June 12th.

If the appropriate regulations are in place, then definitely we are ready to assist, but it must be clear that formula one is not a charity. The image of formula one is vital. Teams must not only be able to succeed in the long term but also have the know-how and the financial ability,” said Haug, as reported by the GMM news agency.

Customer cars were prohibited by the FIA two years ago, which practically made David Richards' Prodrive team – initially accepted by the ruling body to make the 2008 F1 entry list – close their Formula One programme. The concept is close to being implemented by the FIA in 2010, however, while supposedly joined by the transfer of technological knowledge (although that's just a rumor, for the moment).

FIA will reveal the ratified 2010 Formula One entry list less than two weeks from now, although its dispute with the FOTA is yet to reach a finalization. Several discussions between the two bodies are due during the course of the ongoing season.
