A decade ago, the only performance aspect of a diesel engine was that you got more torque for climbing up hills in an SUV. But things have changed, the Germans automakers being at the forefront for fast diesel development.
BMW has the new tri-turbo straight-six, while Audi offers a twin-turbo V6 with 313 PS which has spawned the SQ5 sports SUV. So you might argue that Mercedes is lagging a bit, but not for long.

Rumors have emerged from the Polish media of all places that Mercedes is working on a CDI version of the SLS AMG. Power is supposed to come from a new tri-turbo six-cylinder engine (most likely a V6) with will put out around 400 horsepower.

If you’re overwhelmed with anticipation, don’t be! That because Mercedes still has to put the SLS AMG E-Cell into limited production next year.

In addition, Mercedes’ V6 CDI currently has nowhere near as much power as the equivalent BMW engine, and they’ve never pulled the same horsepower per liter as the Bavarians.
