The world "flagship" gets thrown around a lot these days, as every automaker who made a profit in China is trying to bolster its image. What does it mean, this ship that has a flag? It's the name that used to be given to the biggest, the baddest, the most heavily armed ship in a navy. We're talking 400mm canons and hundreds of thousands of tons.
The Renault Latitude is not a flagship, the Citroen DS5 is not a flagship… this is a flagship! With 523 hp (530 PS), the Mercedes S600 that we saw in Detroit is set to invade America. Not only is it powerful, but it also makes no compromises, with a huge 6-liter V12 with twin turbos motivating the rear wheels. Mercedes could easily have retuned a V8 for the same power, but that's not a flagship.
Is it good value? Of course not, it's an S600 for goodness sake. It's got Magic Body Control… magic. Does a Chrysler 300 have magic anything?
Perhaps the most beautiful bits and pieces are in the captain's quarters, where the commander can see what his fleet is doing via a jet-figher-inspired Head Up Display. And only the finest materials in the empire have been used to provide immaculate and timeless finishes.
