In late April this year, Mercedes-Benz AG started an EQS vehicle due to a quality assurance-related concern. More specifically, the German automaker discovered a loose rear seat belt buckle bolt connection. Merc eventually concluded that said electric luxury sedan had been improperly reworked at Factory 56, which is Mercedes' most technologically advanced plant yet.
Further investigation revealed a deviation in the rework process. The bolts that secure the rear seat belt buckles might have been torque below the required specification, which is why said bolts might loosen while driving from the vibrations caused by road imperfections. In other words, we're dealing with a higher risk of injury or death for the rear occupants.

Mercedes acknowledged its error by issuing a recall for a small number of vehicles. Only six of them were sold in the United States of America, namely five units of the EQS 450 and one unit of the EQS 580.

Production dates for said vehicles range between October 21, 2021 and December 7, 2022 for the 202 and 2023 model years. No field reports or warranty claims have been filed with the German automaker thus far.

Mercedes improved the rework procedure for the EQS on April 28, addressing said problem. Dealers will be notified of this recall tomorrow, July 7. Service technicians will be required to inspect the rear seat belt buckle screws (part number A0009908115) of the affected EQSs and – if necessary – retorque the screws to the correct specification. Owner notifications will be mailed no later than August 29 by first-class mail.

Internally referred to as V297, the EQS is often hailed as the S-Class of electric vehicles. A five-door liftback rather than a four-door sedan, the Sonderklasse's zero-emission sibling has been recalled numerous times already. Be it poor design, poor quality, or suppliers that didn't do their jobs properly, something did happen.

And it did rather happen rather often. For the 2023 model year, the AMG EQS is listed with one recall, whereas lesser versions of the EQS with three. The 2022 model year EQS 450+ is also listed with one, plus 13 recalls. Spending top dollar on the Stuttgart-based automaker's flagship electric sedan only to be disappointed appears to be a pretty bad investment.

But still, let the people vote with their wallets. Those in the market for an EQS need to shell out $104,400 for the 450+, which is called this way after its advantage in driving range over the 450 4MATIC. The dual-motor alternative features the very same battery (108.4 kWh), costs $107,400, and makes do with 340 miles (547 kilometers) on a full charge versus 350 miles (563 kilometers) for the rear-wheel-drive 450+. The lineup is topped by the $125,950 EQS 580 4MATIC, whereas the AMG EQS can be yours from a cool $147,550 with 649 ponies on deck (or up to 751 ponies in boost mode).
