Mercedes October Sales, Up for the First Time in 2009

German carmaker Mercedes Benz announced on Friday its sales figures for October, the 10th month of the year bringing Mercedes the first positive results of 2009. Long story short, Mercedes sold 97,700 passenger cars, meaning a four percent increase over the same month of 2008.

We will continue this positive trend in the coming months, and we expect sales in the fourth quarter to be above the level of the same period of last year,” Joachim Schmidt, Mercedes-Benz Cars sales chief, said in a release.

Brand by brand, Mercedes Benz Cars sold 88,400 units, meaning a seven percent increase over the 82,500 units sold in the same month of 2008. smart accounted for the total number with 9,300, a lesser performance than the 11,300 units sold in 2008 (down 18 percent).

As for the markets to lead the way, China was, once again, at the top of the list (from the percentage point of view, at least). The Asian country managed to set another record, exploding 78 percent over 2008 (6,600 units). The US followed, with the 21 percent increase accounting for the best month of the year so far for Mercedes-Benz in the States.

Mercedes-Benz Cars will continue to grow at a dynamic rate in China, and we expect the increase for 2009 as a whole to amount to more than 50 percent.” Schimdt concluded.

In Western Europe, except for Germany, Mercedes sold seven percent more cars than last year. Germany itself posted a 7.2 percent decrease in sales, amounting to 26,500.
