Mercedes-AMG is famous for creating large, powerful sedans and coupes engines that like to travel everywhere in a large plume of tire smoke. So it's understandable that a car like the GLA 45 AMG will create confusion. It looks almost like a hatchback and, even though it wears the AMG badge, it's only got a four-cylinder engine.
The GLA 45 AMG is a brand new flagship based on the equally new entry-level compact crossover from Mercedes. A new type of AMG car requires a new type of commercial, especially since it's not as sporty as the similarly engined CLA 45.

The first ad is called "Freedom Is Catching", which is also the tagline of the marketing campaign for this car. “What do a prisoner, a bride and a dog have in common? Find out in our new TV commercial! #GLA45AMG“, said Mercedes-AMG.

What do they have in common, Mercedes? Other than the fact that they are running around on a deserted strip of road, the connection to a Mercedes with a hand-built engine is lost on us.

With an expected Nurburgring lap time of 8 minutes and 11 seconds and a slight preference for off-roading, the GLA 45 AMG could be America's favorite Mercedes AMG. We just don't think the marketing is spot-on yet. It's a great-looking crossover though!

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
