In a move that has probably surprised a lot of people, Mercedes-Benz's head of design, Gorden Wagener, has apparently lured the head of Audi's Munich design studio to jump boat and come work for the three-pointed star.
Achim Badstübner has worked for Audi for over 13 years and is the main person responsible for Audi's single frame grille, which is now a trademark feature on every model from the Ingoltstadt brand.
Before being in charge of the Munich design studio, Badstübner was head of Audi exterior design, so you can either brag or curse him along with Walter de'Silva for creating the “same sausage, different length” Audi design language from the last decade or so.
At Mercedes-Benz, he will succeed Robert Lesnik, who was also a VAG Group boat jumper in 2007, and who will now be Achim Badstübner's boss as he's been promoted.
Gorden Wagener was quoted by Automotive News as saying that the move is “part of a restructuring that we are working on at the moment.” while an Audi spokesperson apparently decided to make a “no comment” face.
