Mercedes-AMG is preparing a new version of the next A-Class, which will fill the gap between the regular range and the improved 2018 A45.
The new model is expected to be called Mercedes-AMG A40, and it will become the direct competitor of the Volkswagen Golf R, BMW M140i, and Audi S3. According to reports quoting company insiders, the Mercedes-AMG A40 will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which will power all four wheels.
The power plant is expected to deliver between 300 and 340 HP, while the next A45 will go even further concerning output and torque. AS you know, the current A45 comes with 380 HP and 475 Nm (350 lb-ft). The new A40 is not expected to reach the power level of the Mercedes-AMG A45, but it will get very close to it.
Because the Mercedes-AMG A40 will have slightly less power than its big brother, it will not get too close to the 0-62 mph acceleration time of that model, which only needs 4.2 seconds for the dash to 100 km/h (62 mph). Instead, expect a time situated in the mid-to-high fours, with a top speed that is also electronically restricted to 155 mph (250 km/h).
Meanwhile, its big brother, the A45, is expected to exceed 400 HP once the MY2018 model comes to market. Without the Mercedes-AMG A40 in the lineup, the company would have a significant power difference between the “regular” range and the AMG offering. A quick reminder — the A-Class range starts at 90 HP, and Mercedes-Benz offers a power level that goes up to 217 HP.
Some might consider that the portfolio is already split today, since there’s a lot of “room” between the 217 HP model (the A250 Sport 4Matic) and the 380 HP A45. If the latter were to “grow” to 400 HP, the range would be even more split, which justifies the existence of an A40, but also for a model with just 300 HP, for example.
