Mercedes-Benz is one of the brands that have a particular care and respect for its classic models.
The German automaker has announced that its Classic division has worked with its original suppliers to provide customers with a range of parts for pre-war classic models.
The range is momentarily restricted to the S-Series (W 06), which is famous for the valuable S, SS, SSK, and SSKL models. Mercedes-Benz Classic is already working on other components.
Owners of these models can get new parts that are made to the highest quality standards without affecting the original character of the vehicles. Mercedes-Benz Classic sells these parts directly through its network, and the suppliers have used materials and that were in use in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Even if the automotive industry have evolved since then, the automaker and its selected historical suppliers have made a great effort in the name of originality.
At the moment, customers can buy a starter motor, a twin distributor cap for the Bosch dual ignition system, and a timing gear set for the camshaft brake with the nitrided vertical-shaft version (seen in the photo at the top of the article).
In the case of the Bosch dual ignition distributor cap, the part is manufactured from the original material, Bakelite, but the rest of the components keep their authentic look and feel.
Mercedes-Benz offers the usual warranty for all the new parts, and specialist companies were hired in the cases where the original suppliers of the required components were no long available. All of the elements mentioned above are essential to the operation of the pre-war models mentioned in the first paragraph.
The only component that has been improved in specification over the original part was the starter motor that is designed for the entire W 06 range. Its housing corresponds to the original starter, and is secured in the same manner, but its internal components were upgraded.
The engaging relay comes from the current starter motor production line, and the drive-end bearing and the freewheel transmission mechanism of having been redesigned.
Thanks to the improvements, the starter motor looks identical to the original part on the outside, is still fitted with tensioning straps, but provides more power for the engine start of the legendary models.
