Mercedes-Benz announced that it's expanding its future portfolio with a line of cars that will exclusively feature electric propulsion systems.
Daimler’s premium brand called the new division EQ, and it is supposed to have vehicles that will ride on dedicated platforms, along with having a different design when compared to their conventional equivalents.
The first concept shown under the EQ name was the Generation EQ Concept, which is an electric SUV that seems to have a size comparable to the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
At first, before the range was officially announced, the German electric vehicle brand was supposed to have four models, but the number grew to seven after the reveal of the electric SUV concept.
Evidently, Mercedes-Benz will not launch seven electric vehicles at once, all under the EQ brand, but representatives have explained that the lineup will eventually have seven models.
Until that time comes, the EQ line-up will start with the production version of the Generation EQ shown at this year’s Paris Motor Show. Expect to see it on the market by the end of 2019. However, the more interesting question to us is what comes after the electric SUV.
The initial four models that were planned included two sedans and two SUVs. Presuming that Mercedes-Benz will stick to the original plan, and that the Generation EQ Concept will be the first model to receive a production version, we must expect at least two electric sedans from the Mercedes-EQ brand.
The first of the two sedans is presumably similarly sized to the current S-Class, and will present itself as a more luxurious alternative to the Tesla Model S. Meanwhile, the second sedan from the EQ brand could be an affordable model that will have comparable dimensions to the C-Class, thus becoming a Tesla Model 3 competitor. Other possibilities involve an E-Class-sized electric vehicle or a full-electric sports car.
Unfortunately for us, we do not have any official word from Daimler regarding the future products of the EQ brand, as the German corporation seems to have done an excellent job of keeping those files to itself.
