Mercedes-Benz announced a new brand for electric vehicles at this year’s Paris Motor Show, which was named EQ.
Mercedes-Benz explained from the first moment that the new range of vehicles would come with integrated solutions for mobility, which will include home charging stations.
All the new models sold under the EQ line will be separate from the “normal” range of Mercedes-Benz cars, which will mean that they will not be electrically converted variants of internal-combustion-engined vehicles.
The base for these automobiles will be the EVA platform, which is short for Electric Vehicle Architecture. It means that Mercedes-Benz has developed a modular platform that will only be used for electric vehicles.
The said platform might not be made from scratch, as Mercedes-Benz had plenty of options to choose from, and the automaker did not announce this during the presentation.
The EQ range will start with four models, which will probably cover multiple segments. Two of the models will be SUVs, while the other two will be electric saloons.
The design of these vehicles will be different from what Mercedes-Benz usually does for its regular models, thus creating a separate brand identity that will benefit from the vast experience of the German automaker.
Speaking of experience, the new electric models from Mercedes-Benz could also get influences from its divisions, namely AMG and Maybach. While AMG has an EV in its portfolio, the SLS AMG Electric Drive, there is no clear intention of developing sporty versions of the future electric models sold under the EQ nameplate.
On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz can benefit from its Maybach division, which has already been employed to make a particular version of the S-Class.
Their next project is an SUV, but it will also be sold under the Mercedes-Maybach name. However, rumors suggest that the German automaker is considering the development of Maybach versions of some of the models in the EQ range.
While Mercedes-Benz has yet to comment on the possibility, you cannot rule this out because it makes sense. Just like mainstream automakers have begun offering premium variants of their regular models, which also provide a concierge-type of service on top of the typical customer experience, Mercedes-Benz has the resources to do the same with the upcoming EQ range.
